Hi all

Has anybody had experience with the Radeon Pro WX 7100 and FCPX in a 2010 Mac Pro? Currently running HS 10.3.6 and an NVIDIA GTX 980

Thanks!

Thanks for this. I read that one. I was thinking of something more FCPX/video editing specific. Still, it looks like the the 7100 card (or two of them) are a good choice.

Considering Apple makes FCPX and they are specifically recommending the Sapphire PULSE RX 580 (which is available as an 8GB card), I would use that if moving to Mojave. It is easily powered via dual mini 6-pin to single 8-pin.

The WX 7100 is a nice card, but does not look like Apple will be optimizing FCPX for it at the moment. It should work, but many of the substantial benefits will only be on the Windows/PC side. And it's $300 more than the Sapphire PULSE RX 580 8GB currently. Wait a few weeks until Mojave is out of beta and there should be more info.

Your NVIDIA GTX 980 may be more than fine for Mojave if the compatible NVIDIA Web Drivers are released. I'm currently using GTX 1080 FE on 10.13.6 with mostly Adobe products.

Thanks! My GTX is a fine card, but I feel it has become slower when it comes to FCPX. Maybe this is just an impression but I cannot shake it.

You will likely get better FCPX performance with an AMD card, and in that case the Sapphire PULSE RX 580 is Apple's recommendation.

Unless the Mac Pro 7,1 offers NVIDIA GPUs it is unlikely Apple will ever optimize FCPX for non-recommended or non-system default GPUs. If you use any other software that uses CUDA, those will work better with an NVIDIA card.
