I have noticed that the Apple photos app that is included with HS does not play well with HEIC format photos on my Mac Pro running a Radeon Rx 580. I am finding that when I click on a photo that has been imported into my Photo library in HEIC format, it just goes blank (white screen). Is anyone else having issues? Has anyone found a work around?

Yep, same here. I had to upload them to a website for online conversion to an alternate format.

I believe quicksync capability is needed.

Ooooh....I hope you're right. Maybe that's a way we can get Apple to enable hardware HEVC/HEIC decoding on their *recommended* GPUs for Mac Pro in Mojave! They basically shut down my bugreport/feature request to fix hardware acceleration for video in 10.14.0 and/or reenable it in 10.14.1. That's more of an "optimization", whereas failing to show images in Photos...that's an actual usability failure. @C. Alan, can you submit a bug report to Apple about this?

or

I'll test on my machine when I am back onsite w/ it, and will submit as well.

Ok, I put in a bug report. We will see if anything comes from it. I am sure 10s of MP users are affected by this issue. /s

I caught this after I did a modest upload of about 50 pictures from y Iphone. There are workarounds to make the Iphone use JPGs instead of HEIC, and there is a free app to convert the HEIC format to JPG on the app store.

I just make a little test. Took a HEIC Live photo on iPhone XS, Airdrop to my cMP (select import straight away from the Airdrop request), and display the HEIC picture in Photo apps with only RX580 installed. It seems Apple already fixed this issue in 10.14.1.

I am wondering if it a High Sierra issue then.

I have noticed that the first time you load up Photos, the HEIC photos all appear. It is only when I double click a HEIC photo to display it in a window alone does it disappear (white screen). I also noticed the live is not working with any HEIC photo when you hover the mouse over a preview in Photos.

I am not sure if Apple fixed this in 10.14.0 or 10.14.1. But if they already fixed that in the latest macOS, I don't think they will do anything to the High Sierra bug report.

Also, for your info, I just test it again. Both "hover the mouse over a preview in Photos" and "double click a HEIC photo to display it in a window alone" works in the latest Mojave.

as always with a new format there will be bumps and a lack of support at first, it may be best to shot jpeg for now until support is more rounded if you want to keep life simple.

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT207022
apple says 10.13 is supported so check you have all updates but apple will have moved to only support osx10.14

id shoot jpeg for now, new formats are a pain if you want to share your photos

(as it's HEVC based will VLC play them :D)
