Which card would be best for the average video editing in FCPX on a new MacPro 7,1 - Radeon VII or Radeon RX 5700 XT?

I'm looking mostly on speeding up some effects, mostly Noise Reduction.

One has 16GB RAM and older technology while other is newer but has less RAM.

Is there any advantage to have one than the other?

I'm not concerned about the "sleep/fan issue" of the VII card.

Thanks!

Radeon VII is more of a workstation card than a gaming card and the 5700xt is more of a gaming card than a workstation card. However, both gaming and workstation performance is much higher in the Radeon VII than the 5700xt.

Radeon VII isn't older technology than the 5700xt. The 5700xt is the same architect as the radeon vii. The biggest difference is HBM2 memory in the Radeon VII has which is highly beneficial for workstation applications. The 5700xt uses GDDR memory.

You may want to read these from Bare Feats:

As far as technology the VII is based on Vega 20 and was released in February os last year, the 5700 on the newer Navi technology was released in July of last year.

I'm running an Aorus RX 5700 XT.

If take away the fan and its cover don't we get the MPX like fanless GPU?

There's a couple important differences in how the cooling designs work:
  • Blower cards and MPX cards both rely on the cover around the heatsink to help direct airflow. But the blower cards intentionally use their own fan and so cut off flow from case fans.
  • MPX cards are the full length of the Mac Pro chassis to get good forced airflow through the heatsink.
  • MPX cards use a much bigger heat sink on the W5700X/Vega II models. They are 4-slot cards, with pretty much all of it being heat sink.
Remove the shroud on a 5700XT and you'll just get something trying to convection cool inside the case, with an inadequate heat sink. Exactly what you don't want.
