iPod Radio & earbuds

I am considering buying a new nano, but have a quick question for those who have it (or maybe I missed it on the apple website?):

Do you need to use the APPLE earbuds to get radio reception, or can you ANY earphones and get reception? I understand that the radio won't work unless you have headphones plugged in - but can they be ANY headphones?

Any headphones... I just tried it with my Sony MDR-7506s. (funnily enough, half the time I use the Apple iPod earbuds it gives me the message "Please Plugin Headphones"!)
