Ever since installing Catalina, I've noticed that my RAID is constantly working. It never stops. The data seems fine and the drives aren't reporting any issues. I'm just worried that all this non stop reading/writing is going to break something. Is there something in Catalina that would cause RAID drives a need to update? They're 2x 8TB drives and I've had Catalina installed for about a month now.

The disks are spinning.

Have you checked if power management settings are ok?

Disks are spinning and reading and/or writing. A lot of activity going on even when the Mac is supposedly asleep.

Would this be the system power management settings?

I've been having a closer look today and I have a suspicion that it may have to do with the Photos app. photolibraryd and com.MediaLibraryService have both been using up the most CPU time. My photo library is saved to the RAID drive.

By power settings, I meant to ask is “Put Disks to sleep whenever possible” on?

Generally speaking, if you recently installed Catalina then background processes will run for a few days updating your photo libraries, etc. I noticed that as well, and then a few days later they finished and all was normal.
