I have been using a LaCie 2big RAID as my media store for several years as the volume of data had gotten too big for TimeMachine to backup. Since moving to Catalina I’ve had no end of problems with it. The drive only appears some of the time, and when it does appear it drops off again within minutes.

This drive supports Thunderbolt2 and my Mac is a 2015 rMBP with fairly decent specs (i7, 16GB RAM).

Has anyone else been experiencing RAID issues similar to this? When the RAID is attached then it reports fine for both DiskUtility and the LaCie RAID monitor.

I’m wondering if I need a new RAID, or a whole new Mac...

I don’t know. But let me recommend a backup of that array (if it’s not too expensive), just in case.

I've been doing some investigation, including attaching the RAID to my older Mac Mini that is still on Mohave.

On my MBP the Thunderbolt Link status was showing as 0x7, whilst attached to my Mini it had status 0x2. Since I have two ports on the MBP I've tried switching them over and currently it is showing 0x2 on the MBP with the other port, so I'm waiting to see if that holds or it degrades after a period of time.

The other port on the MBP was being used for an Ethernet adapter, so it is now where the RAID used to be, and is showing 0x2 in that port. So it's not simply the case that one port is broken...
