I have a second generation Iphone(I'm assuming, since I bought it in January).

Never had any problems. Since I did the software update though, now every time I connect the phone to itunes, it starts with "Verifying iphone...." but then if I try and click on anything in itunes at all (either related to the phone or not), then it pulls up the spinning rainbow wheel and the only way to get it to stop is by a force quit.

As a result of this I can't change or add or do anything to my phone. And also my ipod portion of my phone doesn't work.

Any tips or recommendation? Is there a way to do a factor restore without connecting it since I can't even do anythig with it once connected? I'm just concerned that if I do that I'll continue to have the same problem and then will be completely out of luck.

You could try putting it in DFU mode (MRoogle or google it for instructions, I don't know them off the top of my head) and then you will be able to do a factory restore.
