I have raise to speak set for Siri though nothing happens when I raise it to my ear and speak.

1.) Will this work when it is in lock mode?
2.) Is there anything else you need to do or just raise it to your ear and speak?

Thanks.

I'm not sure about it working in the lock screen but here's some info I found on Apple's Support Forums that might help:

I think I got it to work fine now. Everything depends on the kind of moviment you do to raise your phone to your ear. If you have your arm straight down and move the phone to your ear it does not work. It works with shorter moviments. I hold the phone in front of me as if I am reading the screen with my arm bended in 90 degrees. I bring the phone to the ear and it works like a sharm every time.

How did I founf that out? I went to the Apple store and I was able to see that everybody was having dificulty with using the feature. We tried several phones and it seemed to work randomly. After spending a lot of time behaving like an idiot moving the phone up and down thousands of times I sat down and it started to work much better. That was when I realized that it was working better because I was not moving the phone from all the way down but from much closer to my chest.

Now some important information. First, the raise to speak feature works from any screen that is on, even from active application screens. For example, when reading a message, I raised the phone to my ear and it worked fine. At the apple store, some of the apple advisors thought that it would only work if you were already in the Siri screen, which is not true.

Second, I have to say that I actually got my phone replaced just in case it was a hardware issue. However, I tried the new phone still using the long moviments and the raise to speak feature would not work. I changed to the short moviment I described before and everything worked fine. I am convinced that it is not a hardware problem.

I hope this helps. Enjoy your new Iphone 4s.

1) Doesn't work in lock mode.
2) Just raise phone to ear.

1. Works for me in lock mode. There are limitations, for example, it won't retrieve your emails i.e., "show me emails from my wife".. it will ask you to unlock first.
2. Just do what you said.

Raise to speak doesn't work in lock mode. If the phone is in lock mode you have to press and hold the home button to activate Siri.

That is incorrect. It works while the phone is locked unless the user toggles the option to allow this off.

1. It should, provided you didn't disable that in settings.
2. There's nothing special you have to do, just put it to your ear and wait for the two dings. I have found that it's not always responsive on the first try but always on the second.

I can get my raise to speak to work once every 20 tries. Tried several ways to raise it to my ear to no avail. Do you think this could be a hardware problem?

It seems that I found the way

You need to keep the phone with horizontal angle in front of you, then change it to vertical angle at your side.
It worked even in lock mode.

Mine works fine in lock mode.

Also not that it does not work when you are laying down. I have tried this many times with it never working.

Those of you having issues in "Lock" mode...make sure you either hit the power or the home button before raising to speak. As mentioned earlier, a 90 degree swing...IE...hitting the home button while it's in front of you and you're looking at the phone, then bringing up to ear should work. It doesn't have to be "Un-Locked"...but it does have to be "awake"...where you can see the home screen.

If the phone is asleep, it won't work. That would be kind of aggravating, considering how often we move our phones around while they are "off" or "asleep".
