Wanting to get swap out my 27" 2019 iMac with 128gb ram for the MacBook Pro M2max and just keep my extra monitors. I do heavy retouching, 750mb-2tb files are the range. I'm wondering how much ram I need for the MacBook pro for retouching and has anyone done a similar switch? I'm thinking 64gb but I'd like anyone with real world experience to chime in, thanks!

Have you monitored how much RAM is in use with your workflow on the iMac? If your workflow memory use exceeds 64GB on iMac then your suggested MBP configuration may not suffice for your workload. If your workflow need 100GB of memory then your workflow need 100GB of memory.

Thanks, but I was under the impression that the memory in the new Mac chips is completely different that the memory in my intel iMac and so I wouldn't need nearly as much?

For everyday use that impression might be true but your use case is not typical everyday computing use. Most computer users are not opening and editing very large image or media files.

I do not know what programs you use for your retouching work, but for example LrC and PS use whatever memory you make available to them. Editing several images in LrC, and or have several images open in PS, these both programns alone easily utilize up to 50 GB of memory on my 64 GB 16" M2 Mac.

Therefore I would also recommend to go for the max amount of memory you can afford.
