I recently upgraded to an iMac 5k/17,1. Avoided paying the Apple premium on RAM and am going to do that myself, natch. My question is whether I'll get better performance using RAM modules in pairs or (mixed) singles and pairs. I have the stock 8GB in the 2x 4GB modules and only want--for now--to go up to 16GB. I was going to get another 2x 4GB, on the (perhaps mistaken) theory that the RAM will be faster in pairs.
But then I realized a 8GB module is the same price, and would give me future-proofing if I want to go to 24 or 32 in the future. Some quick searches here & elsewhere didn't turn up whether the iMac has three or four memory channels, and whether I'd get worse (or better) performance with three or four RAM modules. So I turn to your expertise!
(Bonus points if anyone recommends a preferred vendor--OWC, Crucial, RamJet, etc.)
Thanks
