Howdy Folks, being a long time reader, this is the first time I actually registered and posted something =. =
Anyways, let me get to my points straight.
I'm posting regarding two issues about the May 2011 iMac.
The situation now is that I ordered the May 2011 iMac 27 inch with the following custom configuration from apple HK online education store at the price of HKD 22,710
3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive+256GB SSD
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
MAGIC TRACKPAD
APPLE BATTERY CHARGER-ITP
Apple WL Kybd+User's Guide-ZP
COUNTRY KIT,IMAC-ITP
Estimated shipment date is June 15th, before which I could easily cancel the order and make adjustments in a new order.
So my first concern is regarding the 8GB RAM option. I was wondering if I should go with the 16GB at another HKD 2800 marginal(around 300-400 USD). I use computers mainly for school and games. My Macbook Pro which was bought less than one year ago, is now as slow as hell, and couldn't run smoothly even under the minimum display settings of World of Warcraft. It takes forever for iPhoto to bounce open when I connect my phone to it. Everything is just slow. Often I find going through PDF files that are more than 30 pages long, troublesome... So I have not hesitated on the other aspects of the hardware of the iMac I've really been waiting for. However, considering I am really not that good with computers and will definitely not be able to open it and add RAM to it by myself, I was wondering if I should cancel this order and go with the 16GB RAM at such cost. The question may sound silly, but "will I need the extra 8GB and what do they mean to me under the circumstances" might be a better illustration of what is it that I'm really asking.
My second concern is regarding the 1TB+256 SSD option. I've read a lot on people's views, complaints, and possible rationale on why there is a 4-6 weeks wait. For me, I would say having an SSD is a must, since I've compared my Macbook Air that is using a much slower processor with my Macbook Pro. And the former, equipped with an SSD, is just unbelievably fast.
Than again, the 4-6 weeks wait is just so hard to bear in mind. And I've noticed the following facts on this one. I pusted them as follows in hope of some better interpretations of such a wait time.
1. 4-6 weeks waiting time for any hard-drive BTO options involving an SSD of the 27 inch May 2011 iMac.
2. 2-3 weeks waiting time for any hard-drive BTO options involving an SSD of the 21.5 inch May 2011 iMac.
3. 3 days waiting time for any hard-drive BTO options involving an SSD of any March 2011 Macbook Pro.
4. There's little variation in waiting times among apple online stores of different countries, or in waiting times among configuration of an SSD along as hard-drive, or SSD combined with ATA drive.
That's pretty much my two concerns, for now. I welcome all kinds of comments
