RAM install (Macbook)

I just took a leap-of-faith and switched from using a PC to a Mac earlier this week. I purchased the basic Macbook 2.0 (no upgrades), purchasing the desired memory upgrade from a third-party vendor.

The memory chips arrived the other day and my two attempts at installing the new RAM haven't been successful. When the new chips are in place, the sleep indicator on the front of the Macbook glows a steady white (instead of fading in and out) and my screen remains black. I've removed them and tried installing them on two occasions with the same results. I put back the factory installed RAM and my Macbook works fine.

I just called the company I ordered the RAM from and the representitive from there suggests that the RAM was just installed incorrectly; that it wasn't fully inserted into the slots.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm very comfortable making this sort of enhancement in a PC, but am hesitant performing the same on a Mac.

Any thoughts?

It takes a surprising amount of pressure to seat the RAM properly. You need to get both thumbs on the long edge and push pretty hard.

Try installing them one at a time and testing. There's still a small chance you have one defective -- by installing one at a time you can isolate.

First off, thanks for the response. As it turns out, it was my failure to insert the memory modules in fully that was causing the problems. Following your advice and using my thumbs to apply the pressure, I was able to successfully insert my new RAM so all is well.

So far, I have to admit that I am one faily happy switcher! Once I learn some of the routine keyboard shortcuts like I had down while working in PC-land, I have no doubt my crossover will be a complete success.
