I am currently going to school for ISS and one of my friends wanted to upgrade to SSD and 8gb of ram. I looked it up on apple support and it does in fact support 8gb of ram. When I took the ram out (2x2gb) and installed the new (2x4gb) ram in, slot two shows empty. I switched them from slot 1 to 2 and 2 to 1 and slot 2 is still empty. I also reset the PRAM. When he gets the SSD in I was going to open up and look at three screws, some forums say to loosen them slightly and it will work. Ram slot 1 and 2 are nice and tight. I won't be able to touch the computer for a week or so because he is out of town but as soon as he comes back ill be able to look more. BTW the original (2x2gb) when installed read in slot 1 and 2 as 2gb. Please help thx

If you put the original memory back in, do they both register? If yes, that would seem to eliminate general mechanical contact issues, but it could still be a bad slot 2. What exactly are the new sticks? Do you get 6 GB if you put a new stick in slot 1 and an old stick in slot 2? and how about the other way around?
I didn't have much time to try that, i felt kinda bad having him buy 8gb and them not working. Just before I installed the new ram I checked and both ram slots showed 2gb. Ive done hours of research and apple says 8gb but some people report 6gb. Im not sure the manufacturer of the ram, he bought it on amazon. Im definitely going to try 6gb next time I get my hands on it. The really weird thing about it is that people report kernal issues when booting up with too much ram installed. Im getting no issues booting works fine but only shows 4gb
Sounds like a bad stick of RAM or you don't have them installed correctly. Assuming you bought them new (did you?), getting the bad one replaced should be no problem.
The 2009 can take 8GB. The 2008 can only use 6GB which must be installed as a 4 and a 2. Do you know what year this 24" is really?

How can it be a bad stick if I swap them out from 1-2 and 2-1, slot one always shows full. Look I maybe a little retarded sometimes but I am not stupid. I retired from the army 3 yrs ago and looking for something to do. I just did the same upgrade in my mac three days ago, everything works fine. Is it maybe a loose number 2 ram slot..
Or it can be a 2008?
Normally, a 4G stick will read 2G since it reads only one side. The RAM you bought could easily be incompatible.
