RAM needed for Adobe CS5/6

Hi All.

Ive just bought a Apple Mac mini MC815B/A, Desktop Computer, Intel Core i5, 2.3GHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive - I'm thinking about buying an extra 8MB Ram to take the machine to 10 MB ram total Will this be enough to run Pshop, InDesign, Illustrator etc, or would I be better of taking out the 2MB that comes with the mac and buying a full 16MB ram?

All thoughts appreciated.

first and foremost your machine only has two memory slots, thus you cannot add more memory, you will have to swap it out. so buying 2x4GB sticks wold get you 8gb as you will have to take out the 2 gb already in it.

secondly, depending on what you do, you mey be fine running photoshop on 4, or even 2gb

This. RAM is cheap though and I'd honestly go with at least 8 GB of RAM. OS X runs pretty solid with most apps with this amount, especially Adobe software. I'd recommend this: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_Mac_mini/DDR3_1333

I think 16 would be overkill, but if you can afford it then by all means, get 16.

Do you know if the 2MB of ram that the mac ships with is 1mb in one slot and 1 mb in the other, or is it just one slot with 2mb and one empty slot.

Ive had machines from apple before and I've always had to ebay one slot of ram to enable me to keep the other slot and do an decent upgrade.

Im hoping the mini comes with 2mb in one and one slot empty so i can buy 8mb as a single unit and have 10mb ram total

It's two slots and it's GB (gigabytes) not MB (megabytes). If the RAM is similar, you can use one 8 GB stick in one slot and leave your original RAM in the other. But single 8 GB sticks are expensive and are usually sold in pairs. It would be cheaper to just buy 8 GB of RAM and keep your 2 as back up.

Although you can mix up rams, it is the best to have matching pairs for maximum performance

16GB is not overkill for Photoshop. If you're doing work on large images or making panos 16GB is a workable minimum. My MP was OK at 12GB running CS5 but occasionally maxed out on RAM, especially when running Aperture 3 at the same time . When I upgraded to the system ran better.

Now, using CS6 24GB is comfortable. Definitely get the max which is 16GB in the Mini's case.

It depends. I have a feeling 4GB to 8GB would be fine for you.

I barely squeak by on a PC sometimes with 4GB of Ram running Photoshop + Lightroom or running one large PSD file.

Again...just depends on what you're working with.
