Ram or solid state?

Im currently running a macpro with 4gb ram and a standard drive, my money is limited so can only upgrade either HD this month then ram next month but what would i get the most out of. Upgrading to 8GB ram first or to a solid state drive?

I would have to say, without knowing what you use your Mac Pro for upgrading RAM would benefit your Mac Pro the most, in a general all around boost in performance.

That depends on your usual workload. Many say RAM is cheap, so get as much as you can, even if it's not needed. However, RAM prices continue to fall, and if more isn't needed now, waiting to buy at a later time when it's actually needed will probably result in a lower price.

To determine if you can benefit from more RAM, launch Activity Monitor and click the System Memory tab at the bottom to check your page outs. Page outs are cumulative since your last restart, so the best way to check is to restart your computer and track page outs under your normal workload (the apps, browser pages and documents you normally would have open). If your page outs are significant (say 1GB or more) under normal use, you may benefit from more RAM. If your page outs are zero or very low during normal use, you probably won't see any performance improvement from adding RAM.

Agree with GG, check your needs. I personally found 32GB to be ideal, and generally use 28GB in my daily routine. Blindly, I'll agree that RAM before SSD, because all the SSD really seems to do is boot and load programs faster. Web surfing is a bit snappier, too, but meh. I feel like SSD is more luxury than benefit, honestly.

knowing what Macpro you own would be helpful. if you have a quad core 2010 it wants more then 4gb ram.

RAM upgrade from 4GB will be beneficial, go for as much as you can afford. An SSD isn't really "needed" as much as RAM depending on what you use the computer for. I use it for video editing and have gotten by fine without an SSD, but having less RAM would have set me back more.

Im from the UK and not to sure best place to get ram is i usualy use aria.co.uk but can only find 4gb sticks. any suggestions then? Thanks for all the advice
