Interested in confirmation from someone who has opened up one of the new machines that the RAM configuration is 2GB soldered + one PC3 8500 slot.

If that is the case, I'm also interested in hearing whether the machine boots when a 4GB stick is installed, and if so, how much RAM it reports available.

No. The ram IS soldered. There is no dimm slot to stick an extra piece of ram into. IF there was a slot it would be on the back side of the logic board under the keyboard which is not user serviceable and would require logic board removal. $100 is a fair price for a BTO ram upgrade to 4GB.

I think there is no space for an extra RAM module.
