i just bought a 24" 2.8 ghz refurb and it comes with 2 gigs of RAM -- just to clarify, in order to upgrade to 4 gigs of RAM i'll have to buy 2 2gig sticks and remove what's in there and replace it

right?

thankee.

do i have to keep the original Mac memory for any reason?

I would in case you have to take it back to Apple for repairs. If you need to do this its best to take out your bought RAM and put the originals back in. That way Apple can't blame you for anything.

Hey you might want to consider this ram from Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231135

I you look at the reviews for the ram itself, there alot of reviews from iMac users on how good the ram is.

You just can not beat Newegg when it comes to price for ram. I bought 8 x 1gb sticks of ram from Newegg for my Power Mac G5 and it was like 245ish bucks. My only beef is now if I had bought it it would be closer to 200 but oh well.
