I am planning to switch my wife from her pc to a mac. She is a professional photographer who will use the mac mainly for photo editing (photoshop, don't know much about aperature) and dvd creation. I am looking at the 2.8 with the 2gs of Ram. I was thinking of upgrading the memory to 4gs but the $700 from mac seems a little steep. Any advise as far as just staying with the 2gs or should I seek out another source for the memory.

Thanks in advance,
Trig

Order the 24" 2.4 for $1799. Upgrade the processor to 2.8 for $250. Upgrade the harddrive to 500gb. This will give you the 2.8 machine with the 1 gb of stock ram. You can then replace the 1g with 2x2gb for $150 or so, and get the same machine, 4gb of ram, and save you a few bucks.

Order a 2.8 with only 1 GB or RAM and then pick 4GB up for $129.99 from OWC...

That is exactly what I did with our 2 24" iMACs. I ordered the memory a few days after the iMacs and all arrived at the same time.

just checked the OWC link and now its even lower - $119.

Maybe if I wait a while, it will be free haha

Thanks for the info. I just ordered a 24" 2.8 so I'll be maxing the ram soon.

yeah I ordered it from OWC with overnight shipping for $135 and it came here in 17 hours

wow..

It boggles the mind that they're able to 1) have the nads to try and sell memory for that much and 2) people probably purchase it on a daily basis, none the wiser. I'm so glad I visit forums for info like this. When 4gbs of memory cost most then one of your own desktops (mac mini), that's just sad.

I ordered the 2.8ghz, upgraded to 500 GB HD, and only requested the 1GB of RAM because I knew I wanted to replace it with 2 2GB sticks (after market). After some research, I ordered from DMS because their prices were comparable and people seemed happier with their customer service. Couldn't be happier!

I ordered my RAM from OWC before my imac was delivered. I got it at $230 before it shot up, but only a few months later it is already $110 less, almost half price of what I paid. I know technology gets cheaper, but this is nuts. I'd say get the RAM sooner than later as the price will increase once the demand dries up.
