Hi i have just purchased a 24" Ali iMac with 1GB of RAM. I have 2 spare 1GB dimms which I have taken out of my 2.2 SR MBP, question is are these compatible with my iMac?

If your have just purchased a NEW Aluminum iMac, then you have an 800 MHz memory model, and earlier 667 MHz SODIMMs are not compatible.

Check the Guides tab at the top of this window

Guides : Hardware : Understanding Intel Mac RAM

Are the 800 Mhz sodimms backwards compatible with the 667 mhz sodimms? I am about to purchase a new mac, which I will purchase 3rd party ram for. Can I take the Imac ram and put it into an SR Macbook?

Sometimes, sometimes not. The Penryn MacBook Pros are widely reported to be incompatible with 800 MHz SODIMMs. It depends as well on whether the SODIMMs have the correct SPD programming to fall back to the rihgt 667 settings or not.
