For Valentine's Day I would like to get my boyfriend a RAM upgrade for his mac pro. He's been mumbling words such as "EEC" etc., but I have no clue which RAM blocks to get him.

Currently, his machine has got 3 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 installed. He's got a 6-Core Intel Xeon, MacPro5,1, if that helps to identify the 'pooter.

What should I get him in order to give his machine a true boost, and in order to comply with his wishes of EEC?

Any and all help greatly appreciated...

It's "ECC". :)

I've purchased extra RAM for my MP from OWC, and am very happy. The simplest way to do it is to go here and get what you need:
OWC Mac Pro Memory

Without knowing the specific details of what your BF uses his MP for (Photoshop? HD Video editing?), nor what your budget is, I'm going to go out on a limb and recommend he replace his 3GB of RAM with 12GB:

OWC also has a rebate program where he can send his original Apple RAM back to OWC for a refund check.

I agree 12 GB from OWC is a good buy. However I would not recommend you send them the original Apple 1GB sticks for a rebate. You'd get less than $5 for the set. In case you need the computer serviced, it's better to pop in the original RAM, so keep it safe.

If your budget is higher you could load him up with 4 x 8GB sticks here:

Really nice deal! I've shopped from them before, no problems.

The brand of RAM is unimportant as long as the specs are the same and the vendor is reputable with a life-time warranty.

Merci!

Thank you, all, for your replies! I got the 12 GB kit from Crucial. I wanted someone who'd be be able to ship within the EU.

Hope BF likes it.
