Ram upgrade question for iMac...

So I am slowly but surely saving up for a 27' iMac...just got to wait until after my daughter is born to see how the funds are looking there. Anyways, this has probably been asked several times before and could be perceived as a silly question but, if you get the imac with the basic 2x2GB can you get a 2x4GB kit for a total of 12GB and it still work ok?
