RAM upgrade question

If I was to buy an imac 27 with the standard 8GB of RAM, then add two 8GB crucial RAM in the free slots, would that be safe?

Or does each slot have to be filled with the same amount? Something tells me yes but I can't find the answer anywhere.

Reason being it would be nice to add 16GB to the existing 8GB using less money that would be spent on only 16GB Apple RAM...

Yes you can, it's intended to it.

You most definitely can, I ran mine with 2x8 GB and 2x4 GB original Apple RAM and had no problems with that. As above simply make sure the speeds match (for the current 5K iMac it will be 1866 or 1867 MHz). Slightly slower or faster RAM should also work, but the faster will run at the speed of the slower.

That is exactly what I have, with Crucial RAM. Its been fine for the last 3-4 years.
