RAM upgrades 4GB (2GB x2) for $190 at frys.com

I'll wait to see how well that ram works for you and anybody else. Than maybe I'll consider it. I'm hoping it works well.
 
It doesn't mention the pin count but if it's 200 then you are good to go! :) Ram is getting cheaper by the minute.
 
Actually, the ecost price is for a kit, i.e., 1GB x2.


The Corsair ones from frys is a single 2GB stick. Corsair is a pretty reputable company back in my PC overclocking days.
 
The local Apple dealers tell me that "cheap" memory will cause the Mac equivalent of "The Blue Screen of Death" so familiar to PC users.

They also say that cheap memory can cause all kinds of performance problems.

Obviously, they have a vested interest in making these kinds of statements . . . . . but I wonder. Would love to hear the experience of others.

True. But we are not talking about "cheap" parts here. Newegg sellsRAM with a better warranty than Apple. Apple gives you a year I think, while the other is lifetime with "forward shiping" meaning they will send the replacement out before they get the bad part from you. Hard to beat a lifetime forward ship warranty.

In any case keep your old 512MB parts just in case you might need a backup some day years from now.

There is cheap RAM. This is the stuff they make from surplus RAM and all those warranty returns. It will be sold as "house brand" with a 30 day warranty. Find this on www.pricewatch.com But we are talking about top brand parts the same as Apple supplies.
 
Ok, now I'm feeling like I didn't do enough homework, although I did buy from NewEgg. I paid more but I am happy and at least it's a lot cheaper than Apple!

Don't worry about that. I was about to order 2 sticks of crucial 2gb sodimms for $115 each, until I came across the frys' deal. It was actually out of stock on the 9/8 when it first appeared on the website. I took a chance and it showed in stock as of today. Mine just shipped out. newegg is a pretty competitive. However, frys does have some good deals once in a while.

The experience varies from one user to another. In my previous iMac I placed 2 GB of inexpensive memory from Frys. There was never a problem with that computer. This time I bought midrange memory from OWC.

If you are worried that you might get incompatible memory, then buy something mid priced. Don't pay for expensive memory. It is just a waste of money. Sure it will work. But you're paying extra for nothing.

Your Apple dealers are salesman. They're not going to point you toward cheaper memory.

In olden days it mattered that memory was "Mac compatible" (and often it even mattered on PCs what chipset you were using). Now, pretty much every DDR2 SO-DIMM chip will work in your MB, MBP, or iMac.

Corsair will work great.

This is a pretty decent price, Frys has had this price for months though. It just recently came back in stock. The cheapest I've seen the RAM go was $170 for 4GB (two $85 OCZ sticks).
 
Quick followup: Popped in the 4gb of 667mhz Transcend DDR2 and everything is running beautifully. I did confirm that they are Micron chips.
Great buy, especially if your not in one of Newegg's Taxable states. And even if so, it's a fantastic deal compared to Apple's prices.

Bonus too, I was able to upgrade my wifes E1505 from 1gb of 533 DDR2 to 2gb of 667 DDR with the "old" memory from my iMac. She'll be a happy camper. Well, as much of a happy camper as one can be on a windows xp box... <evil grin> :D
 
Holy crap!

I was just pokin around on apple.com and saw that they want $850 dollars to upgrade an 2.4ghz 24" iMac to 4gb! That is just INSANE! :eek:
 
Upon seeing this deal I ordered two of these 2GB memory modules - and they work great! :D

FYI, The ICs on the modules I received are made by micron.

I can't imagine anyone paying a premium for RAM, either from apple or from other vendors. With the lifetime warranty on these memory sticks; it's a win win situation.

Did I get hosed!!! Bought 1gig from the apple store (when I bought my iMac)
and I think, I paid $175!!!!:mad:
