I am wondering if I really need more than 1gb of ram. Should I buy a 500mb stick or a 1gb for a total of 1.5? New to the mac plus I am at work now on my work PC. Will activity monitor show how much ram I "would" use? Maybe someone who has 1GB can let me know if they are using all 1gb (i.e maxed out) for quicken and/or MS office?

Is your usage going to be restricted to just MS Office and Quicken?

From my experience I've run both with 1GB quite easily, with no real performance hits. However, depending on how many docs you might have open at a given time, who knows.

More is always better, but if your computer use is limited to quicken and MS Office, 1GB will serve your needs without so much as a hiccup. Think about how much extra money you'd be spending on more ram and what other accessories you could be purchasing instead. Odds are you'll notice, say, a wireless keyboard and mouse, some nice speakers, or hey, even some extra money in your pocket, more than an extra 512 ram. Unless you think you'll get around to some heavy image, video, audio editing etc, I doubt you'll notice much difference between 1.5GB and 1GB.

if you can afford it, max it out with 2 gigs.... you wont regret it....

I would definately agree with Electro Funk.

If you have the cash, max it out, as the more you have, the speedier your machine will feel. If cash is an issue, and all you really need is apps like Quicken and MS Word to function properly and speedy, 1GB will be plenty.

Me, I'd max it out :)

Thanks guys, I decided on the additional 1gb for a total of 1.5. I will probabaly long forget about the extra $50 but I won't be happy if my Mac is performing slowly every day. Insurance I guess.
