I'm going to be buying a new iMac soon and man, upgrading ram on the apple site is the craziest ripoff I've ever seen. +$1,000 for 64gb? Wow. So I'll be adding ram myself it looks like. I haven't bought a computer since my macbook in 2012, and I had apple max the ram out on it. So installing it myself is new to me. Looks like Apple uses 2666MHz DDR4 memory, so I guess that's what I'll be looking for? I want 64GB, so does that mean I should get two 32GB sticks? Or four 16GBs? The iMac comes with 8GB so does that mean I only need to get 56gb of ram? A 32, a 16, and an 8? Seems like it'd be easier just go start fresh with the two 32s or four 16s. How many slots are there in the iMac? Is it easy to install? What are the most reputable brands and where should I buy it? Thanks!

Just get 4 16GB sticks, just make sure you buy in pairs of the same spec. You can keep the original 2 then add 32GB for a total of 40GB also. iMac has 4 slots and is very easy to upgrade yourself. Videos on YouTube if you need. Crucial and Kingston have always worked well for me. Been using 64GB of Crucial now for just over a year with no issues. I got mine from Amazon in Canada. There is Newegg and a few other places as well.

Thanks! Looks like I can get 4 sticks of Crucial 16GB 2666 DDR4 DIMM for $260. But am reading on the Amazon product page that this shouldn't be used with an iMac? Am I looking at the wrong kind? DIMM is what I need right? Not SODIMM?
