I have a C2D MBP and I can't seem to get accurate real-time CPU frequency readings for it. At first I only had CoreDuoTemp installed and notice that it almost always reports 2.17GHz and only occassionally dropped to 1.67GHz. The only time it hit 1GHz was just before the battery died when I was doing a full rundown. So then I installed CoolBook and it generally reports lower frequencies, mostly 1002MHz when idle and 1336MHz in light load, but it's able to show the full range including 1837MHz, 2004MHz, etc. So I'm more tempted to think it's correct.
This leads me to think that it's something wrong with the SpeedIt extension since I noticed that a lot of programs including Hardware Monitor and iStat Pro are moving away from the SpeedIt extension into their own custom extensions and CoolBook doesn't appear to be SpeedIt dependent either. What's interesting though is that I also installed MenuTemperature which is also SpeedIt dependent and it generally reports completely different readings from CoreDuoTemp. Where CoreDuoTemp generally reports 2.17GHz or 1.67GHz, MenuTemperature generally reports 1.5GHz or 1.67GHz and is usually only 133MHz or 1 multiplier off from what CoolBook reports.
Is anyone else having these funny readings from CoreDuoTemp. I think it might be because CoreDuoTemp hasn't been updated for months so it might just not be reading Core 2 Duos properly. Interestingly, the SpeedIt website is down so I'm not sure what to make of it. I would use MenuTemperature since it appears to report the CPU frequency more accurately, but CoreDuoTemp also reports the CPU usage in the menu bar which is a nice feature to have.
