I have installed a new internal 4Tb HGST deskstar 7200rpm in a 3.1 MP to keep iTunes content on and today have been using Makemkv to back some stuff up to it

I have randomly had the drive eject/unmount 3 times causing the back up to fail. Once it has ejected it is no longer visible in disk utility and the first time a repair was needed after rebooting 2nd and 3 rd times the MP rebooted and the drive was fine.

Duff unit or Makemkv issue?

Anyone? I have had a couple of double chime starts since the hard drive went in as well. There are no system files on it storage only.

Could be "duff" and perhaps losing it's "header" information.

In an ageing 3,1 it could be useful to change the drive bay, that you have it in.
And make sure that there's no dust in the SATA contacts, compressed air used
with caution !!

Never used MakeMkv so not able to help on that bit.

After checking for dust / drive bay issue I would get a replacement.

It's worth a go I have slide it out after each failure and reseated it, My issue now is having to order a second drive to stick everything on before returning it as I don't have enough space anymore spanning across the old drives :(

Something else, IIRC wasn't there a 3TB drive size limit in the 3,1 ???
( could explain the unmounts/issues )
Not 100% sure but I remember something about that.

I only ever had 500gb/1TB's in mine ( Which I still have )

Bummer about your storage limit, sorry !

Well it's odd it formatted ok and is recognised as a 4Tb drive it was always the tail end of the Makemkv back up that would cause the drive to unmount/eject, I have never been a fan of buying drives mail order and picked the HGST as it is known to come in it's own box with half decent packaging no one around here keeps drives of that size in stock. Im going to see if I can locate 2 2tb drives to span across.

Im on 10.9.1 bays 1 and 2 have two 128gb ssd's in Raid1 the 4Tb in bay 3 and a 500gb in four which was going to be replaced with a 1Tb

Hmm, sorry if I got the size limit wrong, didn't mean to throw you a curve ball.

Any chance to try "Super Duper" or "Carbon copy Cloner" rather than
MakeMkv ?

I really like Super duper, seems stable and I've had no end of errors with Apple's
Time machine - like you, at the end of the backup !

May well just be a bad drive, it can happen.

I've had good and bad WD & Seagate & Hitachi so difficult to recommend.

At the moment I'm using WD Black drives and my 2 x 3TB Backups are Seagate's !!

M.

Makemkv is just for backing up DVD's and BD's it was happening at the tail end of disk copy from superdrive to the HGST drive I can't replicate the unmount by copying say 100 Gb from the 500 Gb internal drive to the 4 Tb internal and when the drive was first installed copied 950 ish Gb of iTunes content to it with no issue.

I downgraded Makemkv to 1.8.8 and I have now set it up to use the 500 Gb drive as it's save to location instead of the 4Tb.
