Random MBP shutdowns

Ive had my MBP since June, and i have not experienced one single problem, everything has been going swimmingly, until last week. In the past week ive had 3 random shut downs. A grey curtain comes down over the screen and tells me to re-boot. Is this a serious issue? Is there anything i can do to find the cause? Or solve the problem?

that's called kernal attack, not random shutdown

you want to read into the log after the restart

it might be serious hardware issue, or reinstall OS might solve it (for drivers issues)

that's not what i'm suggesting!

okay this is what you do first
go to /Library/Logs/ and open panic.log
(that's the library of the root of harddrive, not your user library)

copy and paste everything there and post it.. that's your kernal panic log

then we'll see what's the problem before you reinstall OS

I've had a very similar experience. I too got my MBP in early June. Everything fine, but this week I have had the same thing with the screen going grey and a message telling me to restart, then just 2 days ago the machine just restarted itself, no warning. At the time I think I was ripping a DVD using Handbrake and on the internet. Everything I have on the machine is widely used, there is nothing unusual. These incidents alone are not enough for me to suspect a reliability issue, however the abrupt restart is a bit disconcerting.

uh... okay, i have to admit i don't understand the kernel panic log, but this sure does not look like it's driver fail... i'm afraid it might be hardware

(i'm not sure if this is the same panic log if you'd go from the console)
try this to see if you get the same panic log

open application\utility\console
view - show log (or something similar, as i dont have my mac now).. and on the left, open the \application\log and find panic.log there, open that see if you get the identical log
(the reason it seems weird to me is that i thought panic log also logs your computer information... also you said you had 3 of these kernal panics, but only 2 are logged...)

if you don't, post that one... if you do, go straight to nearest apple store (or call applecare, which ever one floats your boat)

I found a console log, but it is pages and pages long. And i mean no offence, but i have no idea what kind of information i would be giving out if i posted it up so i am kind of reluctant to do so. I guess i wouldnt mind PM'ing it to someone, if anyone is willing to help me out that is.

I just had another panic. I was only using quicktime and my external HD, everything else was closed. Does this tell me anything?

Its most likely a faulty port. Whilst i still had my PB i had KPs when i plugged or disconnected something from the USB port. It was frequent just once in a while. since you say an external HD im inclined to think something is wrong with your USB or FW port. Depending on which you were using.
