random shut down - no usual symptoms

hey guys
this is the a new one !
today mornin i wake up .. open the screen
macbook wakes up from a nightlong sleep !!

i open firefox and star surfing a bit
maybe about 2-3 minutes and macbook shuts down.
No heating nothing !! i restart it and after working for abt 8-10 mins
it shuts down again !!

it's not hot AT all ... the battery is 98% charged
the power supply was plugged in ... i opened the battery and looked inside
it all looks normal .. no melting or anything like in some of the other cases

any clue why this is happening ?? is this something to do with OS x ?
since i am a switcher i am clueless !!

help ?

p.s. i havent installed any updates (the firmware one or the one for mac os !!)

sounds like a very normal random shutdown to me, RSS, which week is your MB? is this the first time happen to this machine?

Don't know about intel Mac's but my iMac G5 started to shut down, fortunatly it was still under waranty. The logic board was replaced (thats the motherboard on a PC). Works perfeclty now. Talk to Apple.

I heard that all MBs, untill week 35or 38, all has chance of getting RSS, you should call applecare now, in my case, RSS does NOT come with a click sound, but that might be side effect, just let them know when you reporting the problem.

Random Shutdown

Sounds like you are one of the MANY with the shutdown problem. Believe me, it will only get worse and Apple has yet to deal with the issue effectively. Your best bet is to ask for a new machine or for a refund.

I had the same problem with my MacBook and was able to get refund from my supplier. It was the first Mac I'd bought, and I loved it, but could not get it to operate more than 20 minutes without shutting down. First shutdown occurred about a week after receiving the machine.

Switched to a MacBook Pro and have no problems with it after 2 months.

it's been about two months ... would they replace this macbook ?? (i mean its dirty and everything from all the use )
i am even willing to pay the diffrence to upgrade to the macbook pro !!
has anyone got theirs replaced just coz it was shutting down ?

Mines been in for repair twice for random shutdowns, and looks like it might have to go in again :S

I don't think it's a hardware problem, as I have a powerbook, never had this happened to me before, but since I upgraded to 10.4.8 and it has random shut down problem tool.

but it makes a loud ckicl sound and the latest update is that
it also makes a sound which is like a CD spinning in its drive
but louder than usual !!!

the temperature right now is 53 degrees and the book has been turned on since many hours now !!

Exactly same problem for me, i dont have apple care, but still in 280 day of warranty.
The tecnical people tell me that its necessary change the heat synk (10 days aprox.)(yes im in México, lol), but for the moment i install the smcFanControl 1.2 program, and i have it running at 3000 rpm, and my macbook is not shutdown at the moment, anyway, im go to change the heat synk as soon as it arrives.

Call up Apple, they're well aware of the problem. Unless you have a MBP, and then they'll treat you with every ounce of skepticism possible... but it does occur in MBPs (happened to mine -- I had to fix it myself).

And for the goof that said it's not a hardware problem: it is. It's a wire that's been taped down to the freaking heat pipe. I think Apple's been solution has been replacing the heat pipe, but all you really need to do is move the tape to below the wire and it stops the RSS.
