Random Shutdown plagues Macbook Pro C2D as well?

Hello,

I just posted a post in the official apple discussion board to get more responses, so if you responded to that one, ignore this one.

Do the new Macbook Pro C2D suffer from "random" shutdowns due to the faulty heatsink/sensor insulation melting short from running the CPUs at 100% for 10 minutes or so? Because mine does. If yours does as well, please respond. I'm taking it in on Saturday since this is my only computer until then, but I need some consolation that I'm not the ONLY one!

Note: The new firmware updates are not for the C2D machines, and all my software is up to date.

I should note that I only started experiencing this after I had run my CPU at near 100% for about 30 minutes at a time. Even so.. there's nothing that says I shouldn't run my CPU at 100% for more than 20 minutes (which would be ridiculous). Am I supposed to baby this machine or what? Isn't it supposed to be used for heavy duty stuff? I can reproduce the shutdowns consistently so it's definitely not "random", but it may seem that when when I'm working away an it suddenly decides to shut down. Sometimes it even does it when I'm watching the National Geographic video podcast, I don't think that even takes 100% of the CPU.

I have to add a new problem.

Whenever I turn on my macbook pro, either from completely off or wake from sleep, the left fan automatically turns on to it's highest setting (about 20db). And then, ironically, after about 10 minutes and the temperature is much HIGHER, the fans go to their lowest setting. Sigh.

Mine spent 2 weeks on my desk encoding a few seasons worth of DVDs into H264. Those 2 weeks were hot summer days I should add

If random shutdown does in fact plague my MBP, I don't care. Those were some extreme conditions that it worked through, and I really am not bothered if doing DVD encodes when my MBP is placed in an oven will result it in malfunctioning and randomly shutting down.

Haven't had any episodes yet on the MacOS side. Have been having the fan kick in at full blast on the Windows XP side when running Company of Heroes but I haven't been playing it for extended lengths of time.

How hot is your temp sensor reading?

Yeah, I also play Company of Heroes with Bootcamp/WinXP... that's when the shutdowns happen most. Maybe it's a video card problem? When I run both cores at 100%, the max temp it reaches is 81C with the ambient temp being 21C on a hard surface.

I guess I'm the only MBP owner that this happens to . My left fan has started turning on the highest settings whenever I turn my MBP on (either from sleep or from power-off), even though the temp of the cores is 21C to begin with... is THIS problem anymore common?

An update to my situation. I took it in to the Genius Bar today and they took a look at it for about an hour. Sure enough, they could reproduce the fan problem without fail. They have never heard of such a problem so the recommended I leave it with them so they can look inside. Unfortunately, I'm flying to San Diego tonight so I'll have to bring it in to the Apple Store tomorrow in SD.

To elaborate more on the fan problem:

The fans turn on high only when the temperature of the cores is below 40C (which is all the time if it was turned off/sleeping for around 15 min or so). Then, it will not turn off until it reaches 60C. This wouldn't really be a big deal if I did not have to run both cores at 100% for a good 5 minutes before this happens. If I don't, the fans are stuck on high for literally forever. If you have not heard the fans on high (they don't normally turn that high even when running both cores at 100% for 30 minutes), it's about 25db (which is very loud). It only turns on this high when in windows and playing a game.

No problem with MBP

My C2D MBP does not exhibit such a behavior so far. I am running this MBP non stop for about 2 days with iTune radio on. I am doing some testing on this new unit to make sure it does not show any strange abnormal behavior after prolonged use. I usually do this with new computer to catch any "early sign" of ugly problems which may rear their ugly heads down the road in a few months.
