On Chrome, certain websites will suddenly "hang" while loading. I'll get the spinning beachball, and the only way to proceed is to shut down my Mac Pro with a long press of the power button. It reboots with no crash warning or log report. It's happened multiple times while browsing reddit—the page will load, but while the comment section is loading, the freeze will occur. It's happened on Newsweek.com also. But I can't reproduce the problem with the same page once I reboot; it seems to happen randomly. I can switch programs, but Cmd+Option+Esc doesn't do anything, and the computer is otherwise unresponsive until I completely shut down and reboot. This isn't happening on my Macbook Pro, so I know it's specific to the Mac Pro. Is anyone else having this problem? I can't diagnose because there are no error reports being generated.

Where did you look to find error reports?
my guess would be GPU driver related. What GPU do you have?

I've seen this as well -- seems to be an interaction with the drivers and web kit. I can almost always get the crash while browsing if I have Messages open. I'm using a Sapphire 5700 XT as my graphics card. I just make sure only one program is using web kit and no problems.

Vega II Duo.

Oh thank goodness. So I'm not going crazy. I will try this and report back. How does one know if a program is using web kit?

Simple answer.....use Safari.... 😛
The more standard Apple hw/software you use the less likely for problems.

Sadly, I use Safari and Messages (both Apple software), and that's the unholy combo that usually induces it for me. My solution is to keep Messages off when browsing.

A lot of software does, surprisingly -- normally it's a cheap and easy way to display content from the web that all apps can access. Messages becomes a problem when my wife or I send the other a link. Blizzard's Battle.net app is sometimes a problem for me as well. I've even had Xcode involved in one of the crashes.

All indications are this is a driver bug. Hopefully fixed soon.

I’ve run into several instances of Safari in Catalina on MBP16,1 envoking the “using too many resources” restart that auto restarts the browser, then 1-2 minutes later the OS or it’s so buggy that I need to manually restart OS. Most often with eGPU 5700 XT but occasionally with 5500M. I do believe it’s an AMD 5XXX driver issue, but specifically is an OS issue in Catalina.

Websites that upload files/assets via web interface like MASV.io run into this a lot. Works better with Chrome or Firefox without that too many resources issue. Their support has been asking for a way to disable in Safari, but they’re getting no where. It’s worse in Catalina than Mojave and High Sierra.
