Random Yosemite complete freeze ups

Since updating to Yosemite on my 2009 mac pro I have been getting random freeze ups of the whole system that can only be stopped by a forced restart. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing, they just spring up randomly. In fact I had one midway through writing this.

I have run Etrecheck and removed everything that was red but I'm still getting the issue.

Everything is up to date and I'm not sure what to try next. Does anyone have any ideas?

I can provide logs or anything if someone tells me how to get them.

1) Did you upgrade your hardware? e.g. PC graphic card or using non ECC RAM.

2) Is it always random, or has some pattern (e.g. Safari always in used, or running in background)

3) Are you using the beta Yosemite?

4) Did you try a clean install yet? Or boot from a backup HDD?

5) How long did you wait until you force restart the Machine?

6) The mouse cursor also freeze?

7) Is your machine only respond to "hold down the power button", and not even respond to "CMD + CTL + power button"?

For me I thought it was the graphics card but nothing has changed just the installation of Yosemite, and now it doesnt seem that going back to Mavericks has helped either which is odd and points to hardware but all hardware checks out and low level OS is stable and fine.

me too. fresh installed on 2013 rmbp. every few days everything completely freezes and i have to fully restart.

i also notice that tons of apple's own apps fail to actually quit when you quit them. there can be no running apps in my doc, and i can open the force quit menu and its full of pages, preview, notes, safari, quicktime x, and so on.

this makes working with removable media a real pain. hard drives / servers will complain about files in use and then you have to go through a manual process of closing out of these ghost apps to unlock the files. and i wouldn't be surprised if the constant hanging of all these programs also is contributing to all my system freezes.

Yeah its interesting. It appears my issue may be related to hardware, putting in an old GT120 has so far stabilized things. Still trying to figure out how to "prove" that hypothesis.
