Randomly get thrown back the the home screen

This is a major annoyance...randomly while using my iPhone (I've noticed it particularly while using Google Maps) I'll get booted back to the home screen without hitting the button. This is particularly annoying when I'm using it for directions and I have to navigate through the menus back to the directions while driving. No bueno. Any ideas about what's going on?

I don't have the iPhone yet, but both the displays at the local cingular store do this all the time, its rather annoying

the app on the phone is crashing. i suggest you turn your phone off and on. some people have reported that it helps with the stability.

I get this problem, too. I did a restore in iTunes and it hasn't happened as much. It still happens, but hey--it's a rev. A product.

I had this problem the first few days, until I reset the phone. Hold the home and power buttons down for about 5 or 6 seconds until it asks you to power off... Once it turns off, hold the power button again until the logo appears.

Once I reset, I didn't have any more problems with crashing.

I had the exact same problem with email. I figured it needed a re-boot, which I did (see above).

That seems to have fixed things.

Try powering off first (hold the power button down until the slider appears asking to power off). Then turn back on.

There have been some posting issues about the hard reset (holding the power and the home button down simultaneously).

Powering off and turning back on removed the issue of apps frequently shutting down (i.e., returning to the home screen) that I was experiencing.
