Hey there ... I have an older Mac Pro - (Processor: 2 x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon -- 4 GB Memory) -- running version 10.7.4 OS ....

Over the last few days it has begun to randomly shut itself off about 10 minutes within start up. Sometimes just once ... other times it'll do it a few times ... makes a really loud revving noise while doing so.

Its only when I have very few things running (I'm a freelance graphic designer - normally run Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, etc...)

But this seems to only happen when I've got mail and Safari and a few other smaller application running.

Any ideas? I've run the "repair/verify disk and permissions thing.

Thanks in advance for any help!! I haven't had any coffee yet this morning, so please forgive any spelling/grammar ...

hmm ok I've had this problem as well... could be coincidental as I assumed my problem was hardware related. But maybe it's something to do with Lion 10.7.4???

If I shut down or reboot my machine it may restart itself a few times before it will become stable. This once happened about 6 times in a row, even moments after the bootup 'chime'.

It's for this reason my machine has been left on for majority of the last 2 months!!!!

Thank you - at least I'm not alone?? :)

I will look into what you say about the SMC.

Thanks!

vcard is overheating and needs to be cleaned with a can of compressed air

this happened to me.

i had the same problem with 2008 model and was frustrated. i though had apple care and after seeing the genius bar for the 6th time, they replaced it with a 2010 quad-core machine. see what your local apple store could do for you. best wishes.
