I really hate it when you JB your iPhone.. it's reaction is way slower compared to a normal iPhone on AT&T.

I have a 16GB iPhone 3G (T-Mobile) and it takes like 10 seconds to open up my SMS but my friend has a 8GB iPhone 3G on AT&T and it takes like 2-2.5 seconds to open up.

I thought it could be the themes I applied so I disabled everything.

/endrant.

There must be something else wrong. I have a 3gs JB on OS 3.0.1 and my phone performs just as well as when it was in stock form. Have you tried re-jailbreaking?

No, that's just down to what you've installed.

I hate it when people always blame 'the jailbreak' when it is in fact their own actions that caused the slowdowns.

Don't forget that your 3GS has twice as much RAM as his 3G. Things are bound to run faster when MobileSubstrate isn't eating up all of your available memory.

Personally I wouldn't jailbreak a first gen or a 3G because of the slowdowns. Some people can turn a blind eye and deal with the system-wide lag but it frustrated me. OTOH my 3GS runs like a champ jailbroken.

You meant CPU and not RAM

I sympathize with anyone complaining about jailbroken 3Gs and 2Gs. I remember how slow they were without even being jailbroken.

Good point!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A400 Safari/528.16)

I've ran 2g, 3g, and my GS all jailbroken and never had any issues. But I also watched what I installed on the phone that would cause any slow down. Some people get too excited and go all out installing things they don't use or need. Of course I did notice my GS to much more quicker.

Things run faster on a 3GS because of the faster CPU .

More things run at the same time better because of the RAM.

Yes and no.

Take two phones, one where you have a lot of stuff running and it is almost out of ram, and one where you have a lot of available ram. The first is going to run a lot slower because its has to swap a bunch of files due to the minimal free ram.

A Jailbroken 3GS would be slower, how much is debatable, if it had the same amount of RAM as the 2G/3G. While the ads say its 2x the ram, in the real world its 3x because upon booting it has around 150 free where the 2G/3G only had around 50 free.

I'm running a jailbroken 3G and Messaging app takes 2-2.5 seconds.

It has nothing to do with being jailbroken. It has to do with running too much on your phone at once. If your smart about it you can have a jailbroken phone run just as fast as a stock phone.

My own actions? Like what? I turned off Winterboard, I'm not using any themes, I'm not running any applications in the background and I am using everything stock (no custom modifications).
you might want to try to removing winterboard. i don't use winterboard because it really slows things down for me.
I disabled it.
Well the phone is made for AT&T so...
Haha I guess...

Currently it says

Storage: 82 MB on / 14360 MB on /var
Available Memory: 39 MB

and the current processes I have running are:

Mail
Phone

and it took me 7 seconds to open up Messages app. Would that be considered normal to a 3G?

You want some things that you have installed that will slow you down? Mobile Substrate is one.

You say the only processes running are mail and phone. Well, those are just the apps running. Not all the extra stuff in the background which will cause a slowdown.

If anything Jailbreaking is better than stock if you install iPhoneVM. If you install nothing (including Cydia/ICY) then you will be exactly the same as not Jailbreaking at all.

Are you sure you're comparing apple's to apple's when you compare to your friend's stock iPhone 3G? The first time I open the Messages program on my jailbroken iPhone 3G it took about 10 seconds just to show the list of messages, but subsequent launches only took 2-3 seconds. If you want to do a valid comparison you should at least reboot each phone before you compare. There could also be differences depending on how many messages each phone has in its list.

True that.

If I could be bothered I'd restore my phone, time how fast it was for various things, restore again and Jailbreak and time again.

What does Mobile Substrate do? If I removed it will that hurt my iPhone?

Well yeah it takes like 7-12 secs to open the Messages app and like you said only 2-3 seconds for the subsequent.

Maybe its because I have a lot of msgs in the list.

You have to be careful what themes you install!! exspecially with winterboard.. If you read winterboard instructions.. Everytime u make a change, YOU SUPPOSE TO RESTART THE PHONE!!! i Never did it.. And over time its like winterboard doesnt delete the files from the ram that its suppose to or something and causes the resprings to take longer and longer. which is a good sign that your phone will be running slower than it should.. i would recommend restoring the phone.. jailbreaking it, and u can even restore from backup if you want.. it will help your phone run faster..

You can't really bitch about Jailbreaking if you don't even understand the fundamentals. MS is the environment that JB apps, which modify the system - themes, lockscreen info, notifiers, etc., use. MS gets installed by any app that uses it.

If you have a bunch of messages its going to take longer to load the app.

You cannot compare your phone to someone else's. I suggest the following procedure:

1) Restore your iPhone. Do *not* restore your backup; set up as a new phone. Do not synchronize applications.
2) Check the speed of your pre-installed applications.
3) Re-jailbreak. Do not install any applications from Cydia.
4) Check the speed of your pre-installed applications.

Only using this procedure can you discover if and how much the jailbreak itself affected your phone's speed.

First time I jailbroke I installed Winterboard and things started getting RIDICULOUS and completely unbearable. Same incredible lag you're getting.

I uninstalled Winterboard and the thing never got back up to speed, I had to restore and rejailbreak. Since then I've just avoided ever touching Winterboard and I've been absolutely fine. No noticeable lags while jailbroken.
