I live in Manhattan and have a small but nice outdoor area. They are times that rats (which are in every block of this fine city) will come and spent the night munching on my beautiful plants. When I moved in last year, I didn't know and they ate my entire garden - I had a complete garden disaster. In the fall, they ate whole huge mum plants. This year is different: I've put up chicken wire, use mothballs, etc. And have a bunch of traps. Here is an early result:

Sarcasmville.
We caught a mouse in the wardrobe with an easter egg (it was easter time :)) in a trap, and one of it's eyeballs popped out.

My rats are in my garden. But I once knew a guy who lived in a loft building in Tribeca. The rats in the hall drove him crazy. Baits, traps, etc weren't working. So he would sit there is the dark with his rifle and wait. He was an ex-vet. This was his mission.

I can handle rats better than I can roaches. *wretch*

Just be happy they're still outside.

You should get a snake! At least it would be cool knowing that the rats died for a reason.:D

A snake?

Rats I can deal with… roaches are fine… in fact pretty much any creeping and crawling thing is OK… but snakes scare the living bejeezuses out of me.
Completely irrational I know, but even if I see one on tv I get  eyed.

I say get a snake. But, it has to be one of those cool poison spitting ones. Then when the snake gets out of hand you haven a excuse to get a mongoose.

We'd wait in the dark in an alley with pellet guns as kids and wait for the noise or movement. Some times someone would use a flashlight but some of the time our vision adapted to the dark so that wasn't necessary.
I could have used a .22 but in those days that would have brought the cops for sure.
