Got a brand new iphone 3g (16g) and when i shake it (not badly shake it and only because some apps require it) i hear a rattling noise.

I've read it's the inside of the plastic under the volume control, it's the accelerometer and i've also read it's the eject mechanism that ejects the sim.

Did anyone ever find out what it actually was and if it is normal??

On m phone it's the silent/vibrate switch above the volume controls. When I have vibrate turned ON it rattles, when it's turned OFF it does not rattle. This may or may not be the case for you though. My wifes' phone does not do this, I am thinking of returning it for this reason (amongst others) for a new phone.

At the Apple store oxford street now, typing this from here :)

The guy at the genius bar just said its the hold swith for the vibrator, there is a motor next to it that turns to make the phone vibrate and it's normal. He showed me it on his also.

I can confirm after now having tried 3 display models that they all made a ratle noise also.
