A16 was planned to have ray tracing features but due to several issues with GPU, they removed it according to MacRumors.com. It has been a while since Apple keep adding ray tracing features even from WWDC 2023 developer sessions. I have to wonder whether A17 finally gets ray tracing chips or not? Otherwise, there is no reason to support ray tracing features for several years and GPU itself can't really handle it without dedicated ray tracing cores.

If it's true, I wonder what they are up to?

I could be wrong, but IIRC, ray tracing worked with the A16. The issue was it was an energy hog, killing iPhones' battery life.

I suspect that ray tracing could be improved with the 3nm process for future A-chips.

NO ray tracing on the iPhone 14 is a good thing.

You give up your location privacy with 5G. 4G is better here and you don’t lose much. Hum, my tin foil hat is a bit loose - better tighten it up! 😬

Anyway, all kidding aside this is one of those useless power robbing features that is not needed. I don’t game or anything like that but does anyone need or could anyone make use of that marginal increase in picture quality.

This is nothing but a bad deal for 95% of iPhone users. Give us better battery life than this…

Ray-Tracing was a buzz word created by Nvidia to encourage gamer to buy their most expensive GPUs. As a Series X owner, I don’t value Ray-Tracing. In most games the difference between RT on/off is barely noticeable in the majority of gaming environment or unless you pause and zoom in with your eyes.

Most crucially, RT isn’t worth the trade off against higher frame rate. The difference between 30fps vs 60fps is way more noticeable than RT on/off. On a mobile device, RT will likely be an unnecessary battery drain.

The only caveat is that RT does look stunning in cyberpunk on the most powerful PCs. However, for the majority of gamers it’s better off ignored.
