Hi. I just bought a Razer Carcharias headset, but I'm having problems. First, the mic doesn't seem to work. I have it plugged into the line-in port on my iMac (Intel Core i5 with Snow Leopard, bought in July). I've done some searches online and apparently I need some kind of adapter. I was hoping someone could confirm this for me. I've seen a few posts that seem to imply maybe I shouldn't need one, and I hate to spend an extra $30 if I don't need to.

Second, when I play music it sounds absolutely awful. The vocals are so quiet I can hardly hear them, the bass is muffled, and the high tones cause these piercing screeches and beeping noises. Any idea what's up with that?

I believe that a simple adapter would fix your problems. I found this one on Amazon for 5 bucks that should work just fine.

Well, that's definitely cheaper than other adapters I've seen! How certain are you that will work? I have read about using adapters to fix the mic problem, but I have done a lot of searching and never heard anyone complain of the same problems I'm having with the sound output. If I wait another 2 to 4 days for that adapter to arrive I might miss my narrow 7-day return period for the headset. Thanks for the reply!

Ted, thanks for the reply. I'm glad to know that adapter works for sure. I believe it's the same one that an earlier poster linked to (much cheaper on Amazon!).

However, I ended up just selling the headset to a gaming friend who owns a PC. I bought a different headset that works with my Mac out of the box—the Plantronics Audio 770. It was cheaper thanks to a generous Amazon seller, and by most reports about the same or better quality. It works with Mac out of the box but also ships with a USB adapter if you want to use its sound card.
