This is my impressions of the Razer Kishi Ultra controller attachment + iPad Mini 7.
Price Tag: $149.99, released ~April 2024
It is a premium-feeling controller. Has LED light strips on the edges that you can customize the color and speed frequency in the Nexus app. I haven't used it much for iPad games, but it works wonderfully for PS5 Remote Play.
It uses USB-C (no bluetooth) connector on the side that doesn't pivot, so make sure you are able to hold the controller open while lining up the port. There is also a passthrough USB-C port on the bottom right controller halve for pass-through charging, which also works for USB-C to USB-C to say, a larger iPad Pro.
There is also a 3.5mm audio jack on the left-hand controller half. But I haven't tested it out.
I am using the iPad Mini 7 with a case, which some online folks suggest without because some cases may not have enough clearance on the sides of the case to latch on. The one I have by ESR (magnetic cover flap that can be removed) fits alright. This case's volume buttons protruding can cause accidental presses when the controller halves are pressed together.
I have to come up with a rubber standoff to widen the lefthand side a few mm to resolve that.
There is no vibration support under iOS--only Android. So keep that in mind if you are wondering why it's not working. Kind of strange, that I hope Razer is able to implement.
The offset joysticks do take getting used to, if you are used to the PS5 Dual Sense controller layout that have the symmetrical thumbsticks. It makes certain games (FFXVI is in the photo) slightly harder to play because of that. Other buttons are nice and clicky. If you are in a quiet room, waiting room, study hall, library, etc., the noise will stand out.
$149.99 is a hard pill to swallow, knowing there are much cheaper options. A common favorite that I have read on Reddit is the Gamesir G8/Plus for around $80..or the even cheaper in quality and price BDP D8 (around $35-40), but I haven't tried that one.
Love the iPad Mini 7 + Kishi Ultra controller combo. I even bought a zipper case so hold it in so it doesn't get damaged.
Overall, I think I will keep it. It does a lot of things right. The heft of it in your hands, and quality is there. Could use a price drop or 2.
