Re-indexing Spotlight: please help!

okay i have searched on hear and on numerous other sights.. nothing is working. i have tried a couple of the terminal things and the adding/deleting your harddrive from the privacy list and even a re-index spotlight program...

does anyone have anything that is fool proof and that has worked for them. i will do anything.. my spotlight has nothing indexed because when i was installing tiger I was at a friends house and he stopped the index because he had 2 externals plugged in and we were in a hurry.

any HELP would be greatly appreciated.

To reindex Spotlight:

copy this line exactly as it appears into terminal and press enter:

sudo mdutil -E /

just copy and paste that into terminal

okay when i simply paste it in there it asks for my password. i do this and it says: Error, no index found for volume.

Maybe try turning the indexing off on your main drive and then turning it back on. In Terminal, paste the following:

sudo mdutil -i off /

Followed by:

sudo mdutil -i on /

it says could not set indexing status for that volume.

This is truly bizarre. Okay, start a new user account in System Preferences quickly and see if that is indexed. I doubt it will be, but it's still worth looking into.

Is this your only issue at the moment? If you select your hard drive and Get Info from the File menu, what does it say in the Ownership & Permissions section?

Also, try repairing permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. Is it coming up with anything strange apart from a long list of widgets?
