is there a way to download purchased music again? accidentally deleted purchased songs during 2g to 3g upgrade. thx

Usually no but you can e-mail iTunes support and ask about the possibility of redownloading and then let it be a lesson to you to back up. ;)

I have heard tales that this worked in the past, but not so much any more

I've been given the chance to re-download a total of 1 movie and three TV shows but the files were corrupt and not lost.

I stopped downloading entire seasons of a tv show due to files being corrupted. I have found that if you download 3-4 episodes at any given time you will be alright. This of course has nothing to do with your current problem but might help you in the future.

I am use you will be able to re-download anything that is corrupt, i dont see a reason why apple wont allow you to do so. A polite email to tech support will do the trick.

Please tell us if does or does not work for you.

Re-downloading isolated corrupt files, etc. is one thing
Gaining access to your entire purchased library you deleted is another

You can certainly ask... but I wouldn't expect much
