I travel a lot, and always had 1 or 2 books with me to pass the time on the plane. On my last flight I read my first eBook. I'm hooked! I have never had a Kindle or equivalent, so can't comment on the comparison, but the iPad is just great on a plane. Weight is not a problem as I prop it on the table. Glossy screen seems fine too. Of course when I get bored I can play pinball too. . .

Am in hospital and I am reading Richard Dawkins - God Delusion.
I love this iPad, plus I can switch to reading Star Wars comics, whinging on facebook, running to the loo with you porn videos if I get really bored, or just play solitaire in the dayroom.

I sold my kindle so that I could us the ebook feature on the ipad. I still have yet to read a book on it. I think the issue is that I have been too distracted to actually open up iBooks! I think once my excitement dies down, I can actually enjoy the feature.
The iPad is the killer of Kindle...Maybe Amazon should decide which path the future of Kindle choose? I have never had a Kindle too, but you don't have to sell Kindle because of iPad.
A senior citizen asked to hold my iPad, and immediately found it too heavy. I wouldn't consider it a Kindle killer. For people like her, reading is the key, and the Kindle's a lightweight reading device. The iPad's for the rest of us who want to do more than read

Oh man... I saw this too... downloaded the sample and started to read it. The only thing that has prevented me from buying it is the thought of tarnishing those childhood memories.
This is a problem now, but us early adopters are the guinea pigs. In a few years the iPad will get lighter to the point where it won't be too heavy for your senior citizen. Apple has time to build their book ecosystem in the meantime.
I think in the long run it's going to be very difficult for Amazon to justify the Kindle's price/abilities compared to iPad and upcoming Android tablets.

I sold my Kindle, too. I'd had it about six months and read 10 books on it. I've had my iPad a little more than two months, and I'm on book #19. I know a lot of people love the Kindle's eInk screen, but the lack of contrast in anything but perfect light was a constant distraction and frustration (and I was always fiddling with the book light looking for some balance between glare and contrast), whereas the iPad just disappears from my notice once I start reading. (Plus I don't have to keep buying batteries for a book light!)
I always feel obligated to defend the Kindle whenever anyone says the iPad is the Kindle killer. It's not even close to being that. The biggest issue is that while the Kindle may be useless at night without a book light, the iPad is useless outside, period. I have to crank the brightness up all the way, and even then it looks like a smeary mess.
Then add the fact that the fonts look too "computerized," and it's too heavy (subjective), I would never use my iPad as a book reader. It simply lacks the warmth of a book with no distractions that the Kindle provides.
Oh, and I can't stand reading text on a computer for any great period of time.
The iPad may well kill the Kindle in terms of what people buy, but in terms of what's better for just plain reading a book, the Kindle positively destroys the iPad.
Amen. I'm currently reading the (unabrdiged version) Stand by Stephen King. It's remarkably fun and easy to read on iBooks. No eye strain, no hassle.
Better yet, Power Support's Anti-Glare film (which is EXCELLENT, by the way) makes reading almost anywhere much better (gets rid of the glare, fingerprints, smudges...). Now, I haven't had a chance to read in direct sunlight (which may not be a pleasant experience, even with the film on), so I'm curious to know what others' experiences are.
Oddly enough, I flick my finger to turn the page instinctively, without even THINKING about it. I agree, expect that you need a book light at night. I just use a lamp. Maybe you need brighter bulbs in yours? I also find the weight issue a big one for me. It's like the difference of reading a large hardcover and a paperback. I can lay on my side and hold the kindle with one and turn the page with that same hand. Try that with your iPad.
I also fixed any contrast issues wia font hack. Neither device is perfect and in the fitter who knows. Right now i just feel lucky to have the option of both and never hesitate to recommend the Kindle when asked.
