I'm guessing you mean some sort of Lightning iPad and a Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, probably MD821ZM/A.
If that's the case then yes you need a new camera connector. It's the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, which has a Lightning power input:

And, you'll need to add external power. However, it also depends on which iPad you have, and which USB drive you have. Even with external power, not all drives will work. It seems that the iPad Pros may be more forgiving than at least some of the non-Pro iPads, for USB drives that draw higher power.

Yes you will need the newer Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter and external power.It the new iPad called the iPad 10.2. It is the USB Camera Adapter and standard usb thumb drive. Sorry for not being more specific .

What is a deviated folderif you have a Mac do the following. If you put all files you want to transfer on Desktop in a deviated folder on Mac and have iCloud enabled then you can automatically go to files app on iPad and download them from there.
