I am running PadOS on a new iPad. I want to move files from a thumb drive to my iPad. I trying using my old camera connector. It says I need to power it. Do I need a different adapter?

You didn't tell us which iPad, which camera connector, or which thumb drive.
I'm guessing you mean some sort of Lightning iPad and a Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, probably MD821ZM/A.
If that's the case then yes you need a new camera connector. It's the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, which has a Lightning power input:
And, you'll need to add external power. However, it also depends on which iPad you have, and which USB drive you have. Even with external power, not all drives will work. It seems that the iPad Pros may be more forgiving than at least some of the non-Pro iPads, for USB drives that draw higher power.
It would help if you listed the specs of your equipment.

It the new iPad called the iPad 10.2. It is the USB Camera Adapter and standard usb thumb drive. Sorry for not being more specific .
Yes you will need the newer Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter and external power.
Or else you can use a powered USB hub with your existing adapter.
