Read/Unread Status Finally Fixed?

Since the inception of MobileMe, the only issue I had between keeping my Mac, MobileMe webmail, and my iPhone all in sync was that the read/unread status of email was never in sync between all the devices.

For example, if a new email came in and I read it on the iPhone, both MobileMe webmail and Mail.app in Leopard would still have the message marked as "unread" indefinitely. Similarly, if it was read in Mail.app the message would not be marked as read on the iPhone or MobileMe webmail. But it seems tonight, for the first time in 4 weeks, it's actually working correctly. As soon as I read a new email on the iPhone, the message instantly goes from unread to read in Mail.app and vice versa.

I had a long chat about this issue with a MobileMe support rep via the online chat they offer, and when he couldn't solve my problem he sent it to the escalation team. I don't know if this had anything to do with why it suddenly works (I was told they'd contact me within a week, but they haven't).

Anyway, does anyone else notice this is now functioning properly?

Just tested, yes that side of things is working, read on iPhone and it is immediately marked as read in Mail

Unfortunately the push to my iPhone isnt working, it only shows up when I go into the mail app

Mail on the Mac is working perfectly with Push
IPhone Mail has no Push at all

Cool, it does work. I bet the development team is working on implementing this in the reverse direction as well (updating the unread count on the iPhone when it's read through webmail or a computer).

Hmm, maybe it's not completely fixed. For you guys...say you have new email and your iPhone is just at the home screen displaying the unread count on the Mail icon and then you go and read that message in Mail.app or the Webmail -- how long does it take for that unread count to clear?

It seems this is the only thing left that isn't working properly for me. If the Mail application on the iPhone is open, and I read the email in Mail.app or webmail, it will get marked as read quickly. But if the iPhone is just sitting at the home screen, it seems that unread count doesn't get updated.

Edit: Southerndoc, I think what I'm posting about is exactly what you are describing...correct?

Yea, it only updates it one way (iPhone updates unread count when mail is read on the iPhone).

Here's hoping they implement it going the other way too (update the iPhone count when mail is read on the computer or web).

Me too. That badge on the iPhone's Mail application mockingly stares at me with the wrong unread count way too much!

Mail icon "unread number" wrong

On my MacBook the Mail icon keeps showing a large number of unread emails. Any suggestions as to correct this?

have you tried simply selecting all the messages, right clicking, and hitting "mark as read"?

Southerndoc, I thought you might find this interesting. I chatted with MobileMe support and they forwarded my issue to a support specialist. I had a chance to ask him about the issue we are having (iPhone unread count badge not updating unless Mail is manually launched or a new email is pushed). Here is what he had to say:

I am glad to hear that the read/unread status is working better for you now.

As far as your question about the notification badge on your iphone email. I do understand your frustration with this as it is also happening on my iPhone!

At this time they do not have an ETA for a fix, but they are aware of the issue and I have been reassured that engineering is looking into this. So to answer your question, yes eventually this feature will work as you would expect.

Again I apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience during this not-so-smooth launch.
