When the iPhone is connected to the computer (via USB cable), is there a way to read/write files to the hard drive (such as my home folder)?

I'd like it if my app could backup and restore information in case a customer want to transfer information from a lite version to a full version. Or maybe they want to revert to older data, or many other reasons.

Thanks for any help.

The iPhone SDK doesn't have any frameworks that allow access to the dock or anything beyond. If you want to access other machines, you'll need to do it over the air.

Yup. You'll have to either back it up to a web server or you can use a wi-fi network to transfer files to desktop application on your computer.
