Reading list/Reader can't use offline?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I thought that was the entire point.

Like you could save the plain text of an article to read later when you know you'll be on the subway/a flight/some other time you don't have online access.

Otherwise, what IS the point?

Was super disappointed yesterday when I tried this out for the first time right before getting on a plane. Turns out you still need internet access to read them.

Reading list is pretty much pointless, i have different bookmarks on my Mac to my iPhone/iPad, as some of them are on my home screen so there is no need for them, so i have bookmark syncing turned off, i hoped reading list would give me a way to access pages saved on all devices, but its linked to bookmark syncing, so you have to have all your bookmarks and reading lists syncing, or neither.

I dont understand the point in reading list, if it's not going to be separate from bookmarks, or like you said enables offline reading, without these features, its just bookmarks, which we've already got.

This brings up a similar situation with dl magazines. It takes FOREVER to download a magazine... sometimes up to half an hour! But the next time you want to view the same magazine, only a few pages (if any) will still be on your iPad. Then, it's repead the dl!

Worst of all is that you can not access these (very expensive) materials without internet access. So, again, what's the point! I thought once you dl a magazine, you could port it like a paper version. Not so. If this doesn't get resolved in the print world, I think the future of digital magazines and newspapers is dim. I'm certainly not going to shell out $20 for a subscription (that costs $12 or less for print delivered to your home) or $4 per issue (!) and not have it ready to read after the initial dl process.

Offline reading list in iOS6

Sorry it this is a bit of a non-sequitur, but Apple have said that iOS 6 will allow the articles in the reading list to be available offline. Until then, just hope the site uses a cache manifest.

I use reading list as a quick store for links/articles I’m going to want later that day, or as a quick way to share links between my PC/Mac/iPad.

It only takes two taps to add a site to my reading list compared to a bookmark, which requires a name and the folder you want to put it in. Reading list items also display a short description rather than just the name you give them.

If I want to read an article offline, or it’s something I want to read, but probably won’t have a chance to for a few days (e.g. a long article I want to read all at once, or to collect a few reviews for a product I’m considering buying) then I’ll send it to Instapaper.

Even though iOS 6 is going to save articles for offline reading, I doubt my usage will change, though iCloud-synced tabs might mean that I have less need for the reading list now.

Sorry but I'll have to correct you guys on one point. I work for a digital magazines company. We make iPad apps. Im writing one now. You can definitely read them offline. With a newsstand subscription they even download in the background at night (usually must be plugged into power and have wifi as well as permission). If your mag doesnt do that, complain loudly to them! If they say it's apples fault, they are probably lying!
