Ready to take the plunge IMAC Time is it worth it?

hi,

in the next few days i planning to buy my first mac and getting the Imac 27 i7 but kind of crapping it cause i read loads of posts with peoples different problems with imac example yellow tinting and buzzing noise. It worries me because i dont want to be calling apple with problems when i find a problem it bugs me to hell and just notice all time.

i may find i know some people get imac's that faultless is it really worth buying overall? i not to bothered about the "refresh" since nothin major

I can't answer you from a point of personal experience, but having read many posts on both the issue's you mentioned, and funnily enough in posts I read on here tonight in the top few threads in this forum.

Other Mac members have stated that Buzzing is normal and it's just how they are, and also the slight yellow tint issue, also is normal and part of the design.

Hinting that neither issue will be corrected/changed till perhaps a more substantial design change to the current Mac's takes place.

I can appreciate that one persons "Hardly notice it" buzz, can be another persons loud annoying noise, depending on your hearing and where you use your machine (at work or at night at home in total silence)

Also the yellow tint is of course a matter of judgement also, and one persons horrid yellow may be another persons "it looks fine to me"

Either way I wish you luck and hope whatever you do, you are happy with the end result

Unless you're completely satisfied with the current stats, and possible problems, I see no reason not to wait.. Not one.. If you're itching to buy just cause you want it, you'll probably be better off waiting for the next stat bump.

I personally can't stand the feeling that for my hard earned money I could have waited 2 more months and gotten a better machine, even if the changes are minimal. This is just me though.

Just to say I fully agree with you.
I can think of nothing worse (for me anyway) than to lay out a large amount of money, and within a few weeks, know that something better has come out and the lovely thing sitting on my desk is the old model.

i been itching to buy one for quite long time wanted one originally, before the lot of updates came out to "fix" the problems that occured alot and apple delayed shipment. i keep thinking i could wait for the refresh batch but after that i could think might aswel wait now for the newer versions lol. the buzzing i get with my iphone 3g sadly. if there were a guarantee for when the refresh is out i maybe could wait but no accurate date at ,just guesses from looking on websites.

i off for my summer now so plenty of time to do things and really want to get into app making for the idevices thinking about i7 macpro but with imac get more bang for your buck

My guess, based on the past cycles, is the a new iMac will not appear before Sept since historical cycles have been alternating 8 and 11 months - so Oct 09 to Sept 10. This year Apple took much longer to upgrade the MBP, 10 months instead of the usual 8, and the MBA and MP have broken records for refresh waits at over a year and counting. The wait game really sucks for macs since Apple likes the higher profit margins by stalling refreshes and keeping prices high despite their lower costs but I think the wait will be at least 3 more months, possibly more. MBA and MP are well overdue.

Regarding the yellow, mine is perfect and as a photographer this is critical and my iMac is calibrated for color accuracy. If you order and get a bad one you can just send it back for a refund and wait for the new generation which may or may not have its own problems.

Regarding price, you can hedge your bets by going refurb. You save a few hundred dollars and get a same as new warranty which can alleviate some anxiety over fear of an imminent refresh. No, its a reckless waste of money, underspecced, overpriced and financially irresponsible.

When you add up the down time and the number of repairs it will need in a relatively short period of time then I think its the worst purchase you will ever make...

of course...as you're posting on a Mac board and likely understand the types of replies you will get I figure you've already made your mind up, and this thread is a bit pointless...

just opinion based on vast experience......

that could very well apply to the entire iMac line, although i'd argue not the 27" i7. the only weak part there imo is the graphics card, which isn't even weak.

in my opinion, if you want a lower spec machine, it's worth the wait. if you want a top end model, buy now, they'll not change much with a refresh.

the screen issue, if apparent in yours at all, are likely not to be solved with a simple spec bump but will require a full redesign. as i've mentioned elsewhere, my imac is perfect. quiet as a mouse with no buzzing or sound whatsoever and a perfectly uniform screen.

FWIW, it seems many of the complaints have quieted down. When the iMac was launched last October, it went many months with all sorts of issues, the worst being screen flickering. This has been fixed with a firmware update. Yellow screens still happen but it seems they are more rare now. Haven't heard much lately about loud HDs, this was a big complaint at launch time. Buzzing seems more prevalent on the 21.5" iMacs than the 27" models.

I'm waiting for the revised high-end iMac.

just remember how old and poor (by comparison) the i7 in the Imac really is...

Went through 5 iMacs varying problems. Yellow, grey bar, grumbling hdd, High pitch whine when lowering brightness, backlight bleeding, no wifi card, dead and stuck pixels (also in iSight), and even dents in the stand itself. This was all in the past month. Buyer beware.
