Some reports indicate much worse fan noise levels for the 14 M1 Max:

The first guys seems a bit non-specific while for the second video there is no reference point: e.g. Is the 14 is'just audible' vs 'as annoyingly loud as the Intel i9 MBPs'

Any real world feedback? I'm quite set on the 14 inch form factor but still contemplating canceling the Max order for a Pro. I would have liked the extra ram the Max affords but not at the expense of noise and battery life. I guess I might just be able to run a few less Docker containers...

Please keep the feedback specific to the question thx :)

See also this thread focusing specifically on Max vs Pro comparison on thermals, battery and fans (both for 14" and 16"):

I've got a 14 m1 max. I never hear the fans unless I'm doing a benchmark, or playing an intensive game. I'm going to run an idle battery test today (there won't be any browsers/etc. for this test). I'll give it 8 hours and see how far it drains on idle (without going to sleep).

FYI the fans didn't even turn on until 90C in cinebench. Either apple is delaying the fan ramp, or they only turn it on around 90. I'm guessing the former with no empirical data (X seconds at Y degrees or above, Z fan RPM).

Also, the fans even at 95C/3000 RPM are not "THAT" audible. It doesn't sound like a jet engine or anything, granted I'm mining with like 7 PCs in the house so I have an audible hum from all the other white noise lol.

The 14m1 max supposedly gets the worst battery life, so we'll see. If you can point me towards any other structured/consistent/repeatable tests (like some tool that browses the web/specific sites repeatedly), I can try those later also.

That's good to know. My benchmark is my 2019 MBP15 with the i9, that thing was annoyingly loud.

I'm terms of tests: I will usually run a Parallels VM with W10 to do Visual Studio work or run e.g. some Docker containers. Likely not the most repeatable workload :)

Although the mere running of Windows 10 in the VM would see the fans go to jet engine level :)

In terms of battery I would be happy with 8 odd hours... The MBP never lasted more than 4.5 :/

My experience (Dec 2020, M1 MBP13") with early release of Parallels running ARM version of Windows for hours of my favourite notes Windows-based app resulted in no noise, marginal battery drain.

I actually need to learn how to do Parallels/W10/VS/Docker, lol. I was hoping to just do .NET Core DEV on this thing. I'm a windows only person up until this week, I haven't used Docker (or parallels) yet.

If you PM me some bulleted steps to install those things, I will do it for you. There seems to always be a "gotcha" that will probably accelerate my installation if you mention those lol.

Thanks!

How's lap use while under load? Is it a ball-boiler like the i9 16"? lol
