Could someone explain the meaning and value of a laminated screen? I'm not sure my understanding is either full or correct.

The 2017 iPad is missing both the fully laminated screen and anti-reflective coating so rediced contrast and increased reflectivity. Also, the iPad Air had a very hollow feeling when tapping and the taps are very audible (like tapping on hollow plastic) due to the air gap.

The reflections in brightly lit environments is the one I have the most problem with.

In answer to the OP’s question, I wish we knew the answer. Unfortunately though, with the way the new Apple is these days, there is no telling. I mean, who would have ever thought that they would go several years without updating their computers?

I would have bought a new 12.9” iPad Pro this week if they had at least updated the display, cameras, and a A10X chip...and perhaps some minor improvements to the Apple Pencil as well. But they didn’t do a darn thing and the 12.9 iPad Pro is the same as it was a year and a half ago. It is outdated compared to the 9.7 iPad Pro, which is a year old itself.

I’ve never seen such inconsistency amongst Apple products as I have in the last 2-3 years. Product lines are fragmented and nothing makes sense anymore, so all bets are off on when an update will come. With the way Apple operates, it could easily be another year.

I don't expect the 9.7 to remain. They will replace it with a 10.5 screen with the same overall dimensions. No reason to have two devices at the same size with the same features.

I am really in need of an iPad Pro. I am a musician, and it is really ideal for viewing and editing sheet music. I am tired of caring around huge stacks of music and would love to consolidate in an iPad pro. Do you realistically think that the new iPad Pro 2 12.9 inch will be coming soon? I want the 12.9 inch, because its perfect for music. Apple has been advertising the heck out of the iPad Pro recently, but no one has the 12.9 inch model in stock. Are they trying to clear out the old inventory to release a new model? If not, why would they be heavily promoting a product that they have very limited stock on. If you don't think new iPads are coming soon, should i get the current model? Thanks!

If you need it now, buy it.

If you can wait, then wait...but you can wait a very long time.

I would buy it now and would sell it if you need "the new features" from the new iPad Pro 12"

The rumors swirl still...won't surprise me if we have to wait until Sept or Oct.

People that were on the fence about buying...that's what happens when you let speculation dictate your actions. If you were in the market for the Pro 9.7"...best time to buy was last year. Some good sales then and you could have enjoyed the new iPad all this time.

I love it.

Sit on the fence some more...I'm sure it's comfy up there. :)

Dears,

Could it mean that iPads Pro are getting a refresh in early April ?

Look on YouTube...they show the Air1 and the Air2 displays and the screen difference is significant.

The new iPad is a no-frills update to the Air1...Apple threw in a 2015 processor in the Air1 and the result is this.

No more and no less.

Lol, seems more cobbled together than that.

2013 iPad Air: chassis, display
2014 iPad Air 2: TouchID, camera, wifi
2015 iPhone 6s: CPU, RAM

Let me ask this- I am currently still on my iPad 3 (I have a wife who hates tech... so..........) If I picked up this new one, having never even played with an Air2 or Pro, would I still find it lacking? Believe it or not, if my 3 was not suffering from some damage, I would not be too concerned with replacing it, even though it is very sluggish.

No, anything after the 3 is a noticeable step up.

If you can get it on sale ( like at Bestbuy)...it will be a very good bargain still even when you consider the Air2 came out more than 2 years ago.

The next step up would be the Pro 9.7" but only get it if on sale of $125 or more

I'm pretty irritated as I expected the iPad Pros to be updated today. I want the 12.9" iPad Pro, but it lags behind even the current 9.7". Is it really a surprise that iPad sales are falling if they can't update their flagship product after a year and a half?!

I was ready to buy today, now I'll keep my money. And yes, I know this was all based on rumors, but again the flagship model is overdue for an update.

PS - glad I wasn't expecting a Mac Pro update ...
Lags behind??? As it has double the ram expect it to outlast the 9.7 pro performance wise over the next few iOS version updates.

I agree, I want a proper upgraded 2017 iPad Pro. But here are the 2 scenarios I think will probably happen...
1.) No update until fall 2017 or later. Apple's iPad sales are declining, (but with the entry level one just released it might give a slight sales boost.) So Apple wouldn't be in a huge hurry to upgrade the Pro line right away.
2.) April or June 2017 release, Apple perhaps waiting for a proper Spring event to coincide with their new campus and in celebration we could get some updated devices. (That's my hope.)

At a hardware standpoint though, the Pro 12.9" and 9.7" are still the most advanced and powerful tablets around. The most powerful Android device is the Pixel C (which I think is the best phone around) but it's power is level is just on par with the iPhone 6s.
Samsung's S3 is projected to be more powerful than any of their offerings but it will still be behind the Pros, (of course only time will definitively confirm that.) Personally, I absolutely want a new iPad 12.9". I want it with a new A10X Fusion processor, haptic home button (an absolute must have,) a 12MP/4K video camera, and DCI-P3 cinema display... buuuuut, for now I can wait, as the current Pro is still the biggest beast of all tablets.

*long post, my apologies.

Lags behind feature-wise. I get that it's still a monster of a tablet, and will remain quite capable for many years. But since it's a very premium priced tablet, I expect it to have premium (and current) features. What I want is the wide color gamut display, True Tone, better cameras, and at this point an A10X processor. If the current one works for you, then great. For me, I'm not going to replace my current iPad until they sell one with the features I want.

I'm waiting for the Pro2 12.9" also.

But with a dearth of iOS features to buttress the 12.9" hardware to bring the iPad to the next level, it remains an expensive niche product.

I'm starting to lose patience and interest with Apple.

As for when it will be released, my money is on Sept/Oct all along. All this talk of a March release was just people wishing.

The focus is this year is on the iPhone and the iPhone edition. Always was for quite some time now.

I don't think anyone is suggesting otherwise. Yes there are those who place a high priority on tech specs, and for those folks, that makes a lot of sense.

It DOES seem like the hardware capabilities have far outpaced the functions provided by iOS. The greater the disparity between hardware and OS, the more intolerant customers will be when an OS update starts to slow the system down.

My patience and interest began to wane when the big iOS 10 reveal showed that it was nothing more than "Emojis-R-Us". It was at that moment that I knew that Apple was not interested in keeping me as a customer.

I'm puzzled as to why you would be waiting for a Pro 2 when Apple has demonstrated (what appears to be) a lack of interest in advancing the 12.9 Pro. Given the current state of iOS, is it really going to be worth waiting until Oct/Nov to buy one and at full price? Or waiting 3-4 more months beyond that for a sale? If Apple were to dazzle us with a significant Pro-centric update to iOS 11, then that would change things significantly, but absent that, why not get the current model at a significant discount?

My raison d'etre for the Pro 12.9" is to read comics, full-page in all its glory.

Yes, the current model would work, but I would like more battery life among other things.

I could always pick one up for cheap (v1) if the opportunity presented itself later. Until then, my ipad2 is a compromise, but passable.

Money is of secondary importance. Yes, it would be great to get a deal on it, but it's not the be-all end-all.

I might even pay full price if I have the notion. :)

I am in the same boat, in that the current 12.9" is coming up on 18 months old and the feature set of the 9.7" Pro shows a clear upgrade opportunity. I would be a bit unhappy if I bought the current model and missed a new one by a month or two.

Same as bufffilm, my primary reason for getting the larger model is for comics.

Personally, there are no significant discounts for the specific model I want (256GB LTE Space Grey, the black bezel color is non-negotiable). If I'm paying $1000+ for an iPad (~$1250 after tax without any accessories), at this point in time, it should darned well be better than my iPhone 7 in terms of performance.

In the meantime, my iPad Pro 9.7 256GB works well enough. It's just a bit too small for double page spreads in landscape.

I'm prepared to wait, however long.

For stuff other than comics and ebooks, I have a Tab Pro 8.4" and it works nicely. Bought it for relatively cheap (about $260 w/64gb SD card, case, and anti-glare film). It's just too small for reading things.

Putting stuff on the Android tablet is so easy (compared to syncing with iTunes).

Lol, same. I don't need a 12.9" iPad but it sure would be nice to have. If Apple never upgrades and just kills the 12.9" line, well then they've lost at least a couple of sales. :p

By the way, interesting observation, AT&T has just removed both iPad Pros from their website.

https://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/tablets.html

I don't set any store by what retail outfits do...even Apple's. Whenever v2 drops, it drops. I'm not losing sleep over it.

Now if Comic Glass were to ever hit the Google store, THAT would make me sit up and take notice. :D

Then things would get very interesting.
